IRA 2011--2012 Doodle Your Heart Out Writing Contest for Grades K-12
Enter for your chance to win a classroom visit with Ruth Barshaw McNally
Sponsored by the St. Joseph Valley Council of the International Reading Association,
the Hoosier Writing Project, and the Michiana Writers' Center

Official Rules

The contest is open to all kindergarten through twelfth grade students in the South Bend/Mishawaka area. Each entry may include the work of only one student and must be submitted by a teacher.
Age Categories
Entries will be judged according to the grade level of the student. There will be four categories: Primary (K-2nd) , Intermediate (3rd -5th ), Middle School (6-8th ), and High School (9-12th).

  • The top three entries in each bracket will receive Honorable Mention on the IRA website.
  • The First Place Entry in the primary and intermediate age brackets will be published on the St. Joe Reads website and receive a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble and a signed copy of Best Friends Fur-ever.
  • The First Place Entry in the middle school and high school age brackets will be published on the St. Joe Reads website and receive a $20 gift card to Barnes & Noble and a signed copy of Best Friends Fur-ever.
  • One Grand Prize Winner in grades k-12 will receive a class visit from Ruth Barshaw McNally.


  • Entries must be one double page spread, printed in black & white, that depict story elements through a combination of doodling and text. Do NOT send original artwork.
  • Entries become the property of St. Joseph Valley Council, IRA and will not be returned.
  • No more than fifteen entries per teacher (one per student). Teachers should choose the samples which they feel best represent their school and send them together in one envelope addressed to International Reading Association, St. Joseph Valley Council, C/O Kathy Higgs-Coulthard, Contest Chair, 33499 Old Post Road, Niles, Michigan 49120.
  • No identifying information should appear on any entry. Attach completed official entry form with parent signature (click here for form) to each entry.
  • Incomplete or illegible entries will be disqualified.
  • All entries must be post-marked on or before midnight October 14th.

A panel of judges will examine the entries and rate them on the following qualities:
1. Contains doodles that are central to the story elements.
2. Text introduces interesting characters and demonstrates plot elements.
3. creativity/originality
4. overall appeal
The panel will submit the top three entries in each age category to Ruth Barshaw McNally, who
will choose one First Place Winner within each age category and one overall Grand Prize Winner
from the combined 6-12 grade entries.
