Meet A.J. Sullivan

My name is A.J. Sullivan. My favorite color is green, my favorite books and movies are the Harry Potter series. My best friend is Jacob Clark. I just moved to St. Louis (from South Bend, IN) two weeks ago. My school is called Maplewood Richmond Heights Elementary (MRHE).

I have two younger brothers. I am in second grade and I am 8 years old. My favorite activity is reading and my favorite author is J.K. Rowling. I was born June 2nd, 2004 and I have no pets. My favorite animals are snakes, the more venomous the better! I live in an apartment, really close to Forest Park. We just biked to the St. Louis Zoo this morning!

*Out of more than 120 entries from seven different school corporations, 2nd grader A.J. Sullivan took Grand Prize in this year's writing contest.

A.J.'s story, "Fang," impressed our judges with its use of strong images to develop setting as an integral component of the story.

"Fang" by A.J. Sullivan, 2nd grade Kennedy School

Fang the cobra was just waking up from his bed of leaves. He was five years old and about two feet long. His mom, on the other hand, was eighteen feet long. Their nest was in an Asian forest in India. It had a lot of tall pines, oak, and palm trees, thousands of bushes, and hundreds of animals, such as elephants, insects, tigers, frogs, and snakes like Fang.

It was warm and Fang could hear the frogs croaking, the elephants tramping, and the crickets and cicadas chirping. There were some monkeys, too. Howler monkeys, to be exact, and they were screeching like crazy.

"Mo-m!" said Fang. "Mom, wake up!"

     "What?" said Mom sleepily.

"I want to go practice hunting!" said Fang.

"I'm tired, Fang. We'll go later," said Mom.

"Well, okay," said Fang, a little disappointed.

Meanwhile, the sun had risen and its light cast shadows through the forest. It was warm and the monkeys were as loud as ever. But even their yelling could not disturb the great, warm morning. A little while later Fang and his mom were up and moving through the bushes, across a field, and across the river on a log. Finally, after the sun was all the way up, the monkeys' yells were faint. They were a long way from their nest when they reached the field where Mrs. Cobra usually hunted for food.

"Now, Fang, watch what I do, okay?" said Mrs. Cobra.

"Fine, I'll watch you, Mom," said Fang.

There were some mice (actually a lot of mice) in the field not paying any attention to Mrs. Cobra. She snuck up on one, rose up, opened her mouth, and bit. The mouse squirmed, trying to get away, and failed. Then Mrs. Cobra went back to Fang.

"Okay Fang, did you see what I did?"

     "Yes," Fang replied.

"Good," said his mom. "Now you get to try."

     And Fang did just that.

Friends

by A.J. Sullivan (2012 – 1st grade)

One day Jim asked his mom if he could go on a bear hunt because he was eighteen.

She said, “Okay.”

He got his pistol (just in case), his binoculars and his dog, Max. And off they went. Soon they came to a cave.

“It must be a bear cave, let’s see if he’s home,” said Jim. He took out his pistol. Jim followed Max into the cave.

Suddenly something growled. It was the bear! They ran and ran and ran until they came home.

“What’s the matter, guys?” said Jim’s mom. But they just ran into Jim’s room and hid under his covers.

They thought for a while.

Then he said, “Maybe he was looking for a friend.” So the next day he went to the cave, and he was right!

The bear really was looking for a friend. So they became great friends.

The End.

Seasons by A.J. Sullivan

Seasons, seasons, there are four. Spring and Summer, Winter, too.

Fall, and now who knows them? You!

In Spring many animals are born.

Flowers come back, bears wake up like you do in the morn’.

In Summer it is very hot!

You sweat and drink and have fun, a lot!

Fall, it is a beautiful sight and time,

You start school and learn to do so much, sometimes!

Winter is my favorite, there is a lot of snow.

On Christmas, Santa comes and says “Ho, ho, ho!”

That is all the seasons. Now the poem is done.

I hoped you liked reading it and had a lot of fun!
